Annual Charity Funds awarded to The Silwerkroon Bejaarde Sentrum, Alberton
On Thursday, 24 November 2011 we (Nico and Caroline Martins) went to the Silwerkroon Bejaarde Sentrum, Raceview, Alberton to hand over the charity award to which club members so generously contributed. Upon our arrival at 10:30, people were already eagerly waiting in the passage outside the dining-room for the Christmas Lunch – some with walking sticks and walkers. By 10:45 they were invited in as some of them could not stand much longer. |

| The ceremony started at 11:00. Sixty two people attended the lunch. The welfare workers [photo included] from a local church had set and decorated the tables beautifully to create a festive scene. One of the welfare workers opened with scripture reading and prayer and a short motivational speech with a bit of laughter included.
Nico introduced us, and the Club mentioning that we have over 500 members and how members love riding their bikes, especially on week-end away and longer tours. Although the men were by far the minority group in the room, some of them have also ridden a bike in their time. We then handed out the gift vouchers to be spent at the Alberton City Shopping Center. We could see the excitement on some of their faces at the prospect of buying something special that they need. One lady in the group thanked the Club for their much appreciated contribution and handed over a 'thank you card' |

We then took our departure and the meal of roast lamb, baked potatoes, rice, vegetables, salad and desert was then served. Some of the wheelchair/bed-ridden people could not come to the lounge and the welfare workers took their meals to them in their rooms. |

It appeared to be a worthy cause to make these elderly (and often forgotten by society) people happy, as we approach the festive season.
Thank you to all who contributed to this needy cause.
